Relay for Life is a community-wide event to raise money for and awareness of cancer and those who are caregivers. Sign up at church or online to walk during the event to ensure that we have a walker moving around the track 24 hours a day. You are invited to come out to the track when you’re not walking to encourage walkers, take in the other groups’ campsites, and fellowship. Sunday morning will include special music offered by several local musicians and an ecumenical worship service. Contact: Julie Walter (jewels364ATcharter.net)

As women undergo cancer treatments, many experience the difficult side effect of hair loss. To help restore dignity and simply keep a head warm, our Women’s Ministry gather to cut fabric and sew turbans to be distributed to local, regional, and state cancer treatment facilities for women who need them. The MERCI Center (Marion Edwards Recovery Center Initiative) in Goldsboro is the NC Annual Conference location for storing and processing disaster relief items. Flood buckets, Layette kits, Health kits, Food kits, and various construction supplies are only some of the items collected and maintained at MERCI. We send work teams to MERCI to transport donated items and to sort/process/ship the appropriate items to an area of the world hurting from a natural disaster and in great need. There are many children living in poverty across the country and across the globe who will receive nothing this Christmas. Operation Christmas Child is a ministry of Samaritan’s Purse that collects shoe boxes filled with Christmas goodies from local congregations and distributes them all over the world. Samaritan’s Purse follows up with the children to share with them the story and love of Jesus. Boxes are prepared and collected in October-November. Contact: Brooke Naser (chichinoomoideATyahoo.com)

Substance abuse and addiction is the number one problem in Dare County in the eyes of its residents. Addiction is a horrible disease who’s symptoms can be seen playing out in broken families, lost jobs, homelessness, hopelessness, and physical illness. As a community of faith, we cannot ignore this present darkness.

Many hospitals do not provide the parents of an infant who passes away a dignified means for transporting that infant from the hospital to their final resting place. Jesus Loves Me Cradles are small vessels we construct with love and care to let the parents know that they don’t mourn alone. Contact: Wes Newby (obx_chefATyahoo.com)

When we suffer from physical pain, emotional stress, or social need, knowing that you are being thought of, prayed for, and are not alone, gives peace. Members of the congregation provide hand-made Prayer Shawls upon request to any who may need a comforting reminder that God is with them as are we. The shawls are created on the member’s own time, brought in to church when completed, and it is prayed over by the congregation during worship before being delivered to one in need.
